Thermogravimetry
determines the volatile (burnt) weight fractions by heating the films at certain temperatures during a heating phase. In addition to the determination of inorganic fillers (as in the case of burning in a muffle furnace), TGA also enables statements to be made on oxidation stability, moisture content, the effect of ageing stability agents and decomposition. The instrument is also called a thermobalance. It provides a graph documenting weight losses over the course of the heating period.
