Modulus of elasticity

A characteristic value for the stiffness of a part and/or a foil

In principle, the modulus of elasticity is equal to the applied tensile stress due to force and cross-sectional area divided by the observed strain at that stress. The modulus of elasticity is generally constant until the material approaches the point where permanent deformation occurs. The easiest way to read it is from the slope in the stress-strain diagram before the yield point. The modulus of elasticity allows conclusions to be drawn about the dimensional stability and general behaviour of a part and is therefore an important variable for the design process.
